What is Dropbox?
Dropbox is a great online storage and backup tool that you can sync across multiple computers and access from your phone or the web. You can setup a free account and store up to 2GB. Paid accounts start at $9.99 per month for 50GB and $19.99 per month for 100GB.
With Dropbox you don’t have to worry about emailing files to yourself if you do one thing on your laptop and another thing on your desktop. You also don’t have to worry about swapping out multiple USB keys. Dropbox acts as a virtual hard drive from any machine associated with your account.
Easy To Use
Using Dropbox is a snap. First you install the free software from the Dropbox website on the computer of your choice. I use the Mac Version, and the installation process literally took less than a minute.
Once installed, a little icon appears at the top of your screen indicating that Dropbox is active. You can also create a folder directly to your Dropbox account within the finder. Once this is done, you’re ready to start storing stuff in your Dropbox.
Because the desktop application mimics the drag and drop functionality of the Finder in Mac and My Documents in Windows, using Dropbox from your computer becomes instantly familiar.
Using Dropbox From The Web
Accessing Dropbox from the web is equally easy. Just login to your account from anywhere and your stuff shows up for easy access. You can store and retrieve all types of files – videos, photos, movies, images, whatever you need access to.
From a collaboration standpoint, one of the best features Dropbox has is its Share function. Simply create a shared folder, put the files you want to share inside, and then invite colleagues to access them from anywhere they have an internet connection. This feature alone turns Dropbox into a virtual workspace for distributed teams.
Go Mobile
Dropbox also offers free mobile apps for the iPhone, iPad and Droid that makes it easy to access and sync files on the go. It is the perfect solution for people who travel, use multiple computers or work with a virtual team. To learn more about Dropbox visit http://dropbox.com.
